The Scent: Our Earl Grey Tea is a blend of fine black China teas and the natural oil of bergamot, a pear-shaped citrus fruit. It is this same oil with its distinctive aroma that is at the heart of Demeter's Earl Grey Tea cologne.
The Inspiration: The legend is that a British diplomat sent as part of a trade delegation to China in 1834 by the second Earl Grey, saved the life of a mandarin's son who was drowning. The grateful mandarin gave the diplomat a recipe for a blend of tea to present to the Earl. The second Earl Grey passed it on to his tea merchant, who used the recipe to recreate the blend for the Earl's private use. The tea was so well received among the Earl's guests that they began asking where they could buy the tea. The Earl gave it his name, and the rest is history.

"This scent has a bit of a soapy start- bright and green, clean. After it has some time to settle, it really does become photo-realistic earl grey. I would love to layer this with vanilla or orange for a lovely afternoon tea scent."

"Very true to scent but personally feel it could use a little more juicy orange scent. Overall a very true to tea scent. Upon application I get a VERY lemon pledge cleaner forward smell-- so potent it's almost overwhelming, it borders into "white lemon" territory like so shockingly citrusy it gives almost a resin like quality (I know that's not a real fragrance note but bear with me) . The scent quickly breaks through with black tea notes, these are very true to the tea blend but I find it to be very slightly lacking as it could be a touch more forward. Eventually I'm left with a pleasantly delicate aroma that smells just like I have a warm cup of tea under my nose-- fragrant without being cloying, has that "free moving" scent you'd capture with a fresh cup of tea without blasting your sinuses haha. It's a really nice scent. This would be perfect for a library outing, a chill picnic near a forest, a bike ride, browsing an art market on a sleepy Sunday. . . . it gives me academia & librarian vibes. Very bookish and classy while also having a relaxed energy. I prefery fragrances slightly on the carefree and casual side so this works for me. I'm rating this five stars because while it doesn't match my favorite Earl Grey blend, I drink one that specifically has a LOT of orange notes and that's a "true Earl grey" to me but I've had many others that are closer to this fragrance :) I like it and will continue to wear it!! Probably would match best with a long skirt and 80s inspired outfit with tall brown leather boots, and a vintage trench coat. . . . perfect book store date fragrance. Anyways, I'm getting carried away. Will buy again when I finish my bottle!"
